Key takeaways

How big is decentralized finance?

CoinGecko puts the DeFi market cap at $134.5B as of October 2, 2026, and publishes a 4.46% dominance figure without its base. Its separate DeFi category lists $88.5B. DefiLlama measures something else, $95.8B of total value locked. Each figure answers a different question.

1. DeFi market cap (CoinGecko DeFi measure): $134.5B

CoinGecko’s DeFi data reports $134.5B in market value and a 4.46% dominance figure. That dominance is CoinGecko’s published number; CoinGecko does not publish its base, and on this page’s $2.90T global base the same cap would be 4.6% (WealthyBud data · DeFi measure · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

2. DeFi category total: $88.5B, 3.1% of crypto

CoinGecko’s Decentralized Finance (DeFi) category totals $88.5B, +1.47% in 24 hours. That is 3.1% of the $2.90T global crypto market value (WealthyBud data · DeFi category · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026). Categories overlap, so this share is not additive with others.

3. The $45.9B gap between the two figures

CoinGecko does not publish a reconciliation of the two, so this page keeps them separate. It uses the DeFi market-cap measure for overall size and the category list for token rankings. Its DeFi measure lists Lido Staked Ether as the top asset, at 19.7% of the total.

4. Total value locked: $95.8B (October 2, 2026, 00:00 UTC)

DefiLlama’s public API reports $95.8B of TVL across all chains, and $53.7B (56.1%) on Ethereum. TVL counts assets deposited in DeFi contracts. Market cap prices the tokens. They are different measures.

5. The category list covers 50 tokens worth $128.1B

The 50 tokens CoinGecko lists sum to $128.1B, 44.7% above the category total, so list shares below use that sum (or the ranked-pool sum) as the base (WealthyBud data · 50 listed tokens · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

Which DeFi tokens are the largest?

Ranked by CoinGecko market cap, the largest raw DeFi category members are Lido staked ETH at $26.5B and Wrapped stETH at $12.4B. Both are derivatives of ETH. Among the 37 native protocol tokens left, Hyperliquid leads with $19.9B, ahead of Chainlink.

6. Staked ETH tokens are 30.3% of the category list

Lido Staked Ether ($26.5B) and Wrapped stETH ($12.4B) rank first and second by raw market cap. They represent staked ETH, so counting them as DeFi protocol value overstates the sector. This page ranks them separately (WealthyBud data · 50 listed tokens · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

7. Hyperliquid leads native tokens at $19.9B

It holds 25.3% of the 37-token pool and ranks #11 among all cryptocurrencies. Chainlink follows at $10.6B (WealthyBud data · 37-token pool · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

8. The top 3 hold 49.0% and the top 10 hold 77.3% of the pool

The pool sums to $78.8B. Only 15 of its 37 tokens top $1 billion, and 37 of 37 top $100 million (WealthyBud data · 37-token pool · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

9. 37 of 50 listed tokens pass the pool rules

The pool keeps tokens with a CoinGecko market-cap rank. It drops stablecoins and tokens with no CoinGecko market-cap rank (mostly wrapped or staked derivatives). Pool membership follows CoinGecko’s own DeFi tagging, which includes tokens such as Rain and Bitway. The next list shows the exclusions (WealthyBud data · 50 listed tokens · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

How much DeFi trading happens each day?

CoinGecko reports $7.3B of 24-hour trading volume for its DeFi category as of October 2, 2026, equal to 8.2% of the category’s value. Its separate DeFi measure shows $6.1B, or 4.6% of that measure’s market cap. Volume is concentrated in a few tokens.

10. DeFi category 24-hour volume: $7.3B

That is 8.2% of the category’s $88.5B market value (WealthyBud data · DeFi category · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

11. DeFi measure 24-hour volume: $6.1B

CoinGecko’s DeFi data reports this separately, equal to 4.6% of its $134.5B market cap. The two volume figures use different token sets, so they do not match (WealthyBud data · DeFi measure · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

12. Three tokens trade 40.8% of pool volume

Hyperliquid ($862.7M), Aave ($664.7M) and Pump.fun ($605.4M) lead the 37-token pool, which trades $5.2B in total (WealthyBud data · 37-token pool · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

13. Decentralized exchanges were 3% of crypto trading in early 2023

The U.S. Treasury’s 2023 DeFi risk assessment cites a data aggregator putting total virtual asset volume at $29.7 billion in early January 2023, “with DEXs accounting for only 3 percent of the volume.” That is a 2023 snapshot, not a current share.

How does DeFi compare with Ethereum’s value?

On October 2, 2026, CoinGecko’s DeFi measure equals 40.9% of Ethereum’s $328.7B market cap, and the DeFi category equals 26.9%. Both compare values on the same date. They show relative size only. They do not show that DeFi value comes from ETH.

14. DeFi measure is 40.9% of Ethereum’s market cap

$134.5B against $328.7B for Ethereum (WealthyBud data · DeFi measure vs ETH · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

15. DeFi category is 26.9% of Ethereum’s market cap

$88.5B against Ethereum’s $328.7B in the CoinGecko top-250 table, the same pull (WealthyBud data · DeFi category vs ETH · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026). Ethereum itself is not a member of the DeFi category.

16. Staked-ETH tokens add $39.3B to the category list

Lido stETH, wstETH and StakeWise osETH are claims on staked ETH. Their $39.3B is 30.7% of the $128.1B list, so part of the DeFi figure is ETH exposure repackaged (WealthyBud data · 50 listed tokens · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

17. Ethereum holds 56.1% of DeFi total value locked

DefiLlama shows $53.7B of $95.8B on Ethereum at October 2, 2026, 00:00 UTC. That is TVL by network, which is a different measure from market cap. The rest is spread across other chains, which the layer 1 and layer 2 statistics page covers.

How have DeFi tokens performed over the past year?

Among 34 ranked DeFi tokens with a one-year history, the median change is -34.4% as of October 2, 2026, and 27 fell. The median ranked crypto outside stablecoins moved -40.6%. Stablecoins, staked and wrapped derivatives are excluded from the DeFi pool.

18. Median DeFi token one-year change: -34.4%

27 of 34 lost value and 8 lost half or more. The pool is the 37 ranked native tokens; 3 lack a one-year figure (WealthyBud data · 34 tokens with a 1-yr change · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

19. Broader market median: -40.6%

Across 186 of the top 215 non-stablecoin cryptocurrencies with a one-year figure, the median change is -40.6% (WealthyBud data · 186 top-250 coins excluding stablecoins · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026). Medians compare the middle token, not either group as a whole.

20. Best and worst: Derive +732%, Sei -76%

Derive is worth $406.8M and Sei $477.8M, so both extremes come from smaller tokens (WealthyBud data · 34 tokens with a 1-yr change · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

21. Median 30-day change +36.3%; median distance from peak -79.9%

35 of 37 pool tokens rose over 30 days, yet 28 of 37 remain at least 50% below their all-time high and 12 are down 90% or more (WealthyBud data · 37-token pool · CoinGecko · October 2, 2026).

What risks do regulators flag in DeFi?

The U.S. Treasury's April 2023 risk assessment says the largest illicit finance risk comes from DeFi services that do not comply with anti-money-laundering rules. The Bank for International Settlements adds that DeFi has a “decentralisation illusion” and says that if DeFi became widespread, leverage, liquidity mismatches and interconnectedness could make its vulnerabilities severe.

22. Treasury: DeFi services were a majority of stolen virtual assets in 2022, per one analytics firm

The Treasury assessment says “DeFi services have been particularly lucrative for cybercriminals, accounting for a majority of stolen virtual assets in 2022, according to one blockchain analytics company.” The figure is Treasury’s report of a third-party estimate.

The BIS Quarterly Review (December 2021) adds that DeFi supports mostly “speculation and arbitrage across multiple cryptoassets” rather than real-economy uses. Both reports predate today’s figures, so treat them as framing for the risks, not as current measurements.

What this means for crypto buyers

For buyers, check which DeFi number you are reading. Market cap, category totals and TVL differ by tens of billions of dollars. The median DeFi token is 79.9% below its peak and 27 of 34 fell over the year.

For comparison shoppers, look past the top of the list. Staked ETH tokens fill the first two spots, and Ethereum itself sits outside the category. Dollar-pegged assets belong in stablecoin statistics.

For everyone, read the regulator findings before you deposit funds. Treasury and the BIS both flag compliance gaps and hidden centralisation. Exchanges that list these tokens are covered in crypto exchange statistics, and the full coin table is on the crypto hub.
